Elkhart, IN—August 14, 2017 Most Little Brothers and Little Sisters think that their Big Brother or Big Sister is the best. But only three Bigs could be recognized by Big Brothers Big Sisters as a “Big of the Year”. Last weekend, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County recognized a Big Brother, a Big Sister, and a “Rookie” Big for going above and beyond as a great mentor to their Little Brother or Little Sister
Big Brothers Big Sisters Program Director Brianne Feeks explains: “All of our volunteer mentors, or Bigs, deserve recognition for being positive role models. But each year, we want to show appreciation to a few outstanding volunteers who have really done a great job of building a strong friendship with their Little,”. These Bigs also often support the agency by helping recruit volunteers or attending fundraising events.
This year, the awards went to Big Brother John Place, matched with Little Brother Jaquan for two years; Big Sister Monica Pletcher, matched with Little Sister Dazia for three years, and Big Sister Stephanie, who was just matched with her Little Sister Ana last fall. Little Brother Jaquan says, “My life is different since I met John. It’s changed for the better,”.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is always looking for volunteer mentors who are willing to make an impact in a local child’s life. Mentors get together with their Little 2-3 times per month, sharing activities that they enjoy in the community. Potential mentors undergo a background check, interview, references, and an in-person orientation before being matched with a Little Brother or Little Sister.
